Eat and Drink
The Ponderosa Bar, Ireland’s highest bar and restaurant is less than 5 minute’s drive away. If you are desperate for the big lights of the city, Derry is a 40 minute drive and Belfast is a 50 minute drive.
There’s also plenty of fine restaurants, bars and garden centres in and around the nearby town of Maghera.
Sights
Tirkane Sweathouse is one of Ireland’s best preserved sweathouses, a type of sauna from previous centuries that was thought to have been used to cure fevers or pains.
Tirnony Dolmen is a portal tomb thought to be at least 5000 years old. Find this ancient, well preserved, prehistoric dolmen, thought to be a type of tombstone, only one mile north of Maghera. Interestingly, in the field to the south of Tirnony Dolmen, there is thought to be a souterrain – a type of cave that was dug for locals to hide within in case of attack.
Walks
Glenshane Forest Ancient Mass Rock is a challenging walk perfect for awakening the senses. Follow part of the Ulster Way through the forest then climb to the Ancient Mass Rock, otherwise known as the Priest’s Chair where sometime in the 17th or 18th Centuries, a young boy saved the life of a priest by lying to the Red Coats and sending them off in another direction.
Drumnaph Community Nature Reserve is 80 acres of idyllic ancient woodland, wetlandhabitats and more recently planted forestry is maintained and cared for by the Woodland Trust and Carntogher Community Association. Perfect for a dander and a gander at some of our amazing local wildlife.
